Cherry Picking Time Poured Watercolor

This is a poured watercolor piece. It's 16"x20".

 Here are a few in process photos. 

I didn't photograph the first several steps (Sorry!)

I masked out all of the white areas. 

Poured liquid watercolor: red, yellow and blue.

Mingled it on the paper.

The first photo below is first pour and second masking layer

The second photo is after 4 repeats

Below: Ready for the reveal. Scary and exciting at the same time Oh my,  I was super excited!

But, the colors are a little flat in places and the cherries are really flat.

So now I need to add a few glazing layers, soften the highlights, and bump up the darks.

I saved the tablecloth and the stems to just paint directly.They are not poured.

Challenge 30 in 30 Days 4 and 5 - "Teapot" and "Wayne's Corvette"

Hmm! Not sure what happened to Day 4 and 5.
Maybe, it was because it was a Monday and
then a day at the doctor's office
Both of these were painted in December
Here's a little teapot. 5"x7" watercolor

 

And for Day 5, I cheated a bit. This was a commission that
I painted for a customer as a Christmas gift for her husband.

I saw "Lorie" at a craft show.
When I saw her hat (not cowboy) and her sweet smile
I knew I wanted to paint her. I needed to catch just the right light,
so we stepped to the door which just happily
happened to be red. YeeHaw! And her red plaid shirt, perfect!!!

"Tom Orsak" is an artist and a friend.
Tom is a plein air artist and I love the hat he wears
when he is painting outside.

 I was delighted when he agreed to let me paint his portrait.
He and his wife, Jeane live in Harriet, Texas near San Angelo.

It has been awhile since I participated in Leslie Saeta's
30 Paintings in 30 Days, but it's time to do it again!!!
She suggested to choose a theme or subject.
so I am thinking...
I am working on a series - "Hat People" (will post later)
and for Christmas, hubby and I went to San Antonio.
We loved the Mission Trail. So, I am also painting missions.

"I Am An Artist" Mixed Media Art

I used Donna Downey's "I Am An Artist" stencil 

as the main focus of this video.

This was so much fun to do. I hope you enjoy the video!

I used: Golden's Matte Medium

Golden's Molding Paste

Golden's Carbon Black Acrylic

Assorted other acrylic colors

E6000 Adhesive

2" chip brush

Angie from the Airport - Watercolor Portrait

During a 3 hour layover at the Denver airport,

I saw a very striking, red-headed gal sporting

a cowboy hat and green leather jacket. 

I introduced myself to her and asked if I could 

take her picture and paint her portrait. 

She was delighted that I found her "striking" 

since she had been at the airport for 7 hours.

And I was delighted at the sound of her voice (accent).

Her name is Angie and she is from England.

This is actually the second layer. First layer was  a purple wash, like on the cowboy hat. The flesh wash was a mix of cranberry and yellow, burnt sienna for the hair. I masked a few areas that needed to be white or very light.  

Added shadows and a grey wash to the hat.  

For the background, I repeated the  colors from her hair and jacket.  I removed the masking fluid and adjusted the details.

She had a lovely smile but my favorite shot was this one, looking just a little thoughtful.  Thank you, Angie for allowing me into your space for just a moment!!!

A Little About Art and A Lot About...

Several months ago I started teaching some 4 week art classes at
Western Texas College - College on the Square.

Actually it was July 2014. My time sure gets away!
We did a mixed media classes.

We did a watercolor classes.
(Different group of ladies and a few repeats)

 

We did an Abstract classes.

(another different group of ladies with a few repeats)

We cut, glued, blended, printed, painted, stamped,
smeared, stenciled, glazed, floated, scumbled, and doodled. We fussed, discussed, celebrated, cried, and rejoiced.We got our hands dirty.
We had fun!!!
We stretched our minds around new techniques.
But more important than discovering and uncovering
new skills to make art was the art of making friends.

For me, it is the friendships that have made in the midst of
spilled paint and spilled tears,
torn paper and torn lives,
shared ideas and shared grief,

excitement over a successful work of art
and excitement over an answered prayer.
For me, it is a little about art and
a whole lot about relationships!!!
To God Be The Glory!!!

Day 6 - 30 in 30 Days - A Single Cherry

On Day 2 - I was also teaching a mixed media 

PAINTING class at Western Texas College. 

 

   Day 3 was spent in Lubbock.  Early morning appointment at the oncologists. It was all good and we are so thankful for that.   Day 4 was working on marbling papers for  a class in October. PAINTING? yes and no!  

  Day 5 I PAINTED a silk flag (4'X5') for a customer. Not actually a hang it on you wall painting. 

In between these projects,  I am illustrating a children's book about creation.   I really do PAINT almost every day!!!
So back track to February, I told you I would give you highlights about my (our) year. Hubby had a sonogram on his liver and a ct scan. His liver was enlarged and there were lots of spots on it. This was the beginning of many trips to many doctors and many tests.   February also brought the beginning of the Godly Girlfriends Retreats.  What an incredible blessing to be part of this amazing ministry.
Jesus said, "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." John 10:10  

Day 2 - 30 in 30 Days - The Poppy Field

A little late in the day but here is Day 2 of Leslie Saeta's 30 day challenge. 

THE POPPY FIELD

  I will be teaching another 4 week watercolor class in November. I am thinking this might be fun for the students.  I am amazed at how delicate and fragile the poppies seem but when the west Texas winds blow hard it doesn't shred or destroy them.  They just seem to dance in the wind.   Speaking of hard winds, I told you I wouldn't bombard you  but I do want to share a little about my year, our year, one month at a time! In January, my brother-in-law finished his the race and his battle with liver cancer. He fought long and hard. We stood in faith with him and my sister. We prayed hard, we believed, and we trusted.  Then, we grieved and we celebrated his life and his home going.  Like those poppies, we are stronger than we look  but it is because of His grace. 2 Corinthians 12:9 "My grace is sufficient for thee:  for my strength is made perfect in weakness."
"The rain came down, the streams rose, and  the winds blew and beat against that house;  yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock." Matthew 7:25

Day 1 - 30 in 30 Days - Orange Slices

It has been almost a year since I have blogged. 

There was one post in October 2013 after I was involved in 

my last Leslie Saeta 30 day challenge.

It has been an incredible year and a hard year with lots of 

blessings and lots of challenges - most that had nothing to do with art. 

I may or may not share about that along the way.

And if I do I will not bombard you all at once.

But one thing for sure - when life is hard, God is Good!. 

So here is Day 1 of the challenge.

I just got in a new set of Golden QOR watercolors

from Dick Blick!!! They are so vibrant and concentrated!

I also made a video of this painting but I have to edit before I post.

Hopefully I am back for awhile but 

I am not making any promises.

I do have a few videos that I have recently put on youtube. 

They are from the classes that I have been teaching at

WTC- College on the Square.

Watercolor Daisy in Class Today

The 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is over.
It was a challenge. I do paint almost everyday
but I don't always get something finished.
Oh well, moving on...
I have a couple of new watercolor students
and that keeps me on my toes.
One student has painted on her own for
several years and the other has lost the use
of her right hand and is learning to paint
with her left hand. They are both amazing.
Hopefully, soon, they will let me post pictures
of the paintings they did today. But until then,
here is what we did.
I painted this one first so they would have an example.

  And then I showed them that if
they weren't happy with their painting
to outline with a fine tipped marker

Or add some splatters!
